There is no fairer or fitter place,” exclaimed Jean Ribaut as he surveyed the virgin maritime forests, salt marshes and tidal rivers that lay before him. The year was 1562 and the French explorer had just laid claim to the coastal Lowcountry. In the center of all this unspoiled beauty was the place we now call Palmetto Bluff. But Ribaut was not the first to be captivated by this unique corner of the world, nor would he be the last.
